Chaplin Turns 122!

April 15, 2011

It’s Charlie Chaplin’s 122nd birthday! Born in 1889, Chaplin is indisputably one of the great pioneers of film, and his movies such as Modern Times, The Kid, and City Lights have become cinematic classics. True, he wasn’t right about everything (a silent film artist, he thought the advent of sound would be detrimental to cinema), and his personal life was quite tumultuous. Still, it’s hard to imagine what the art of movies would be like, or the art of slap-stick comedy for that matter, without the genius of Charlie Chaplin..

Chaplin–who received three Oscars over his career, including one for Best Original Score–received an honorary Oscar in 1972 for life-time achievement. Here’s a clip of his acceptance speech. Although he’d been critical of the Oscars in the past, it’s clear from the clip that the Little Tramp was quite moved by the honor..
